The King's Fire Service Medal, introduced in 1954, is awarded to members of the fire services in the United Kingdom for distinguished service or gallantry. Originally also awarded by Commonwealth countries, most have now established their own awards, including Australia in 1988 and New Zealand in 1996.

About this honour

The King's Fire Service Medal (KFSM) recognises acts of bravery or long distinguished service. It was established in 1909 by King Edward VII, and is conferred by the British Crown.

It is awarded to fire service personnel, recognising impact at national or local level, in areas such as bravery, long service and exceptional firefighting.

Candidates are put forward through fire service nomination, assessed by the fire service honours committee and approved by the Sovereign. Appointments are announced in the New Year Honours and the King's Birthday Honours. Recipients are invested at a royal ceremony.

Recipients may use the post-nominal letters KFSM. Recipients wear the medal and ribbon. In the order of precedence it sits below higher national medals.

It signifies exceptional bravery and dedication, representing courage, service and commitment.
