The Most Distinguished Order of Saint Michael and Saint George is a British order of chivalry founded on 28 April 1818 by George, Prince of Wales, while he was acting as prince regent for his father, King George III. It is named in honour of two military saints, Michael and George.

About this honour

The Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George (CMG) recognises outstanding diplomatic or overseas service. It was established in 1818 by King George IV, and is conferred by the British Crown.

It is awarded to diplomats and overseas service leaders, recognising impact at international or national level, in areas such as diplomacy, international service and foreign affairs.

Candidates are put forward through government nomination, assessed by the foreign Office and honours committee and approved by the Sovereign. Appointments are announced in the New Year Honours and the King's Birthday Honours. Recipients are invested at a royal ceremony.

Recipients may use the post-nominal letters CMG. Recipients wear the badge and ribbon. In the order of precedence it sits below knight/Dame Commander (KCMG/DCMG).

It signifies distinguished international service, representing diplomacy, service and international impact.
