The Most Distinguished Order of Saint Michael and Saint George is a British order of chivalry founded on 28 April 1818 by George, Prince of Wales, while he was acting as prince regent for his father, King George III. It is named in honour of two military saints, Michael and George.

The Dame Grand Cross of the Order of St Michael and St George (GCMG) recognises exceptional international service. It was established in 1818 by King George IV, and is conferred by the British Crown.
It is awarded to exceptional diplomatic leaders, recognising impact at international level, in areas such as diplomacy and international leadership.
Candidates are put forward through government nomination, assessed by the foreign Office and honours committee and approved by the Sovereign. Appointments are announced in the New Year Honours and the King's Birthday Honours. Recipients are invested at a royal ceremony.
Recipients take the formal title “Dame”. Recipients may use the post-nominal letters GCMG. Recipients wear the grand Cross badge, sash, star. In the order of precedence it sits above Dame Commander (DCMG).
It signifies exceptional international service, representing leadership, service and global impact.
